Sanatorio Express in Alminsali, the 28th of September, 2018

Iiro Rantanen’s opera ”Sanatorio Express” has been marketed quite a lot and it is now performed on Alminsali stage of the Finnish National Opera and later this autumn on tour in three different cities in Finland. “Sanatorio Express” is an opera-comedy and a comedy about opera. Libretto is written by Minna Lindgren.

The opera tells about people with different addictions, who have come to the sanatorio to be healed by some rather unconventional means and, of course, there are a couple of love plots included.

From the music’s point of view, the opera is quite a mix. There are plenty of references to other operas and even more bits of music borrowed from other songs. The libretto is basically rather light banter, fashionable expressions and lots of repetition. You definitely cannot blame this opera for being too heavy to digest! The first act is rather racy, but the second act (after a rather ingenious prologue) loses the speed. However, all in all the opera is rather clever performance for a night in the opera, even though it will hardly become a classic.

The primadonna assoluta of the evening was Johanna Rusanen. The role of the Soprano was written to be nicely versatile, so that she could show her superb singing technique. In addition to which the comedienne-Rusanen was reigning the stage. It was pure pleasure to follow her facial expressions.

There are still a few tickets on sale for Monday’s (1.10) and Tuesday’s (2.10.) performances at Alminsali according to the Finnish National Opera’s web site. Also performances in Logomo in Turku  (9.10) and in Kuopion Musiikkikeskus (1.11) have a few tickets available, but both the performances in Oulu are at the moment sold out. Fortunately those, who haven’t been able to get tickets, can also follow the opera’s live performance in Yle Areena and Stage24 on Tuesday the 2nd of October.
