THREE BASSES
Three Russian basses –
Vladimir Kudashev, Andrey Antonov and Valery Gilmanov – performed at the Savoy
Theatre in a Christmas concert, where they actually only sang one Christmas
song in addition to a lot of other music. In the first part they concentrated
mainly in opera arias and in the second part to Russian folk songs and
romances.
These basses had
obviously performed together earlier, too, since they really worked well
together. Gilmanov was a true comedian, who was well supported by Antonov, when
Kudashev took a more calm role.
From the musical point
of view the evening was quite entertaining. The singers had very different type
of voices, which was perhaps sometimes too obvious in the ensemble numbers, but
as a Christmas concert it was ok. I liked perhaps most the performances of
Andrey Antonov, though he had his faults, too. On the other hand I also found Gremlin’s
are from Evgeny Onegin sung by Kudashev really heart breaking. I do have to
admit that I like that aria, especially the part where Gremin admits to loving
Tatyana.
After the performance
it was possible to get autographs from the soloists and, of course, I had to go
and have them to my programme. The programme itself was quite funny a souvenir,
since the evening did not completely follow the programme, which was also told
in the programme in a bit bad Finnish. Next time it might be good to have a
person, who knows Finnish a little better, to read the translation. But perhaps
a bit lacking translation suited the relaxed evening well after all.
