Daniel Filippo in Kanneltalo in Helsinki, the 6th of April, 2017

DANIEL FILIPPO

Finnish Chamber Opera performed a new Finnish, though multilingual opera Daniel Filippo in Kanneltalo in Helsinki. The opera consists of three parts and libretto has been written by Maritza Núñez. Each part has a different composer: Max Savikangas, Lauri Toivio and Tuomas Turrago.

The main question of the opera is: “Who is Daniel Filippo?”. To combine three composers into one opera is an unusual solution, but it made it possible to look at Daniel Filippo from three different angles. I think each section gave more substance to the personality of Daniel Filippo, which was actually highlighted by the text. In the discussion held before the opera, the librettist told that she had diminished the number of words during the creative process from one version to the next. In the final text it was possible to see the development from separate words to whole sentences.

The composers formed also the orchestra (a viola, a flute and a piano). Personally I liked most the last section of the opera. It felt as if the picture of Daniel Filippo became finally that of a human being, multidimensional and edged, which could be heard in the music. The role of Daniel Filippo was sung in a very impressive way by Teppo Lampela. He had a chance to use his versatile voice, his face showed all the emotions of Filippo and the role itself was also very physical. Filippo jumped, ran and crawled all over the stage depending on the situation. Very talented performance indeed!

Setting consisted of a couple of benches, chairs and a bathtub, which was all that was needed. Costumes meant in practice that the whole gang was wearing doctor’s coats. Quite a funny idea as such.

Opera has another performance still in Kanneltalo on the 7th of April and I can recommend it to everybody who is interested in slightly different type of opera.
