FABULOUS BÄCKSTÖM BROTHERS
Originally I had a
ticket to this piece already in December, but the performance was cancelled due
to heath issues. I was sad about that since I was really interested to see the
performance after Messiah by these brothers. Fortunately Music Theatre Kapsäkki
organized then substitutive performances in January, when I – despite some
difficulties – was able to attend.
The story tells about
the brothers driving across America in order to get to know each other better.
Due to some job related commitments the trip becomes a rehearsal of Wagner’s
Siegfried.
The performance is
occasionally hilarious and occasionally almost too much. Again setting and
costumes are great (costumes by Tyra Therman, who has done a lot of small
productions). Changing the piano to a dragon was a superb idea!
From the music from of
view, I would say the level was hard to define. The performance began with Toby
Park’s The God Particle (an unusual, very modern piece), continued with
American songs and ended up in scenes from Siegfried. Petri Bäckström really
overdid his role as Siegfried, but perhaps making Siegfried to a comedy will attract
new audience to the opera. To give the brothers credit, they did a great job in
simplifying the – somewhat complicated - story of the opera.
All in all the
afternoon was quite nice. Special thanks to Jukka Nykänen, who spent most of
his time behind the piano. Good musician, but also showed great skills in
comedy!
