Rodelinda at Bolshoy Theatre, the 13th of December, 2016

RODELINDA

Bolshoy Theatre in Moscow is now doing as a joint production with English National Opera Georg Friedrich Handel’s opera Rodelinda. The production itself can wake mixed feelings, since it is a modernized version. I wasn’t personally overly fond of it.

But who cares about the production, when the music is as enchanting as in Rodelinda. I have always liked Handel and this piece is full of beautiful music. And when the singers are as fantastic as in this production, you can only enjoy the performance.

I liked very much the singer of Rondelinda – Dina Kuznetsova. She had a lovely, agile but full-bodied voice, which was a pleasure to listen to. But the absolute star of the evening was the American countertenor Gerald Thompson, who sang the role of Bertarido. Unbelievably great technique and unspeakably gorgeous voice. The duet of Rodelinda and Bertarido in the second act already made you speechless, but the aria “Vivi, tiranno!” by Bertarido in the third act made you breathless, too. I can only wonder, how anybody can sing such a difficult aria with such ease.

This opera I could go and see many many times without problems! Wonderful evening.
