The Song of my Heart in the Monikko Hall in Nurmijärvi, the 25th of September, 2022

This year we celebrate the 150th anniversary since the death of author Aleksis Kivi, and in honour of that the Nurmijärvi based festival “Syksy soi” organized a concert called “Sydämeni laulu” (The Song of my Heart). In the concert the narrator (Jukka Rantamäki) told the story of Aleksis Kivi’s life and in between the orchestra played pieces and soloists sang some songs. The name of the concert comes from the poem by Kivi, and in the concert we heard songs made to that poem from four different composers (Jean Sibelius, Aarre Merikanto, Einojuhani Rautavaara and Kimmo Hakola).

I liked the concert a lot and in my opinion it had two highlights. My favourite of the song ”Sydämeni laulu” was by Einojuhani Rautavaara, and it was sung by Aleksi Matikainen. The second highlight was the absolutely genius idea to play one after another two versions of the same song by different composers. The orchestra played both Samuel Rinta-Nikkola’s version and Einojuhani Rautavaara’s version of the folk songs “Närböläisten braa speli”, “Pirun polska” and ”Hypyt”. Since the pieces were played one after another, it gave the audience a great opportunity to compare them, and I at least found it very rewarding.

Juha Musiikkitalon Camerata-salissa, 24.9.2022

Juha on the Camerata stage of the Helsinki Music Centre, the 24th of September, 2022

Leevi Madetoja’s opera ”Juha” has not been seen in Finland in a very long time, so when Duo Suokas Vasama performed it as a melodrama in the Camerata stage of the Helsinki Music Centre, I had to go and see it. It was my first melodrama, which added to the interest. In the programme leaflet melodrama is described as an independent form of art music, where music supports and leads the text interpreted by the reciter from one event and atmosphere to another. Maria Suokas played the music of Juha on the piano (and acted occasionally the role of Marja) and actor-reciter Tuukka Vasama acted the remaining roles (and occasionally also Marja).

”Juha” tells about a young wife Marja and her older husband Juha. Marja is not happy with her marriage and leaves with the wandering salesman Shemeikka only to notice later that he tends to take his women home to become his mother’s servants when he has grown tired of them. Marja gives birth to Shemeikka’s son and regrets leaving her home and dreams of returning back. Juha finds Marja and assaults Shemeikka, since he believes the man has kidnapped Marja. When he hears that Marja has left voluntarily, he drowns himself.

I would have preferred to hear the work as an opera, but I liked this melodrama also a lot. The music played by Suokas was powerful and colourful and it would be great to hear it also played by an orchestra. Vasama was a good actor, and he made the characters live. The paintings of Dmitri Zudov, that changed with each scene, also brought a nice addition to the performance.

I can, based on this performance alone, recommend Duo Suokas Vasama’s future melodramas and I am a bit sorry that I haven’t seen their previous works.

Hortus Musicus Musiikkitalon Camerata-salissa, 18.9.2022

Helsingin Barokkiorkesteri toi Musiikkitalon Camerata-saliin virolaisen Hortus Musicus -yhtyeen 50-vuotiskonserttiinsa.

Hortus Musicus in the Camerata stage of the Helsinki Music Centre, the 18th of September, 2022

Helsinki Baroque Orchestra brought to the Camerata Stage of the Helsinki Music Centre the Estonian orchestra Hortus Musicus for their 50-year anniversary concert. The director (violinist) of the orchestra Andres Mustonen told during the concert both about the pieces they played and a little bit about the history of the group.

The concert was divided to several blocks, which were under one theme. They played music from the 14th century to present day from different corners of the world. Some of the pieces were racy and suitable for dancing and some were ardent and religious. The lyrics were printed in the programme leaflet, but in some of the songs parts were left out in the performance and all did not go in the same order as in the leaflet.

The soloists of the evening were soprano Jaanika Kuusik, tenor Anto Õnnis, baritone Tõnis Kaumann and bass Riho Ridbeck, who - except Kuusik – also played some instruments.

It can be said that it was possible to get some kind of an idea of the vast programme and musical influences of the orchestra during the evening. I liked almost all of the pieces, but my favourite was Claudio Monteverdi’s “Lamento della Ninfa” from 1638. Kuusik’s solo in the beginning of the song was stunning and the hypnotic repetition of the word “Miserella” of the other singers during the song was mesmerizing.

Espanjalainen hetki Aleksanterin teatterissa, 11.9.2022

The Spanish Hour in the Alexander Theatre, the 11th of September, 2022

The second opera of the French Evening was Maurice Ravel’s “The French Hour”, which tells about the wife of a clockmaker, who after her husband has left for work, meets her young poet lover. But this time also a garbage collector (in the original story a muleteer) and a banker come to the house at the same time. The poet hides in a clock and the wife asks the garbage collector to move clocks from one room to another and tries in the meantime play with the poet, though he seems to be more interested in quoting poetry to her. The banker also hides in a clock and gets stuck in it. The poor wife doesn’t seem to find any calm moment for lovemaking and finally gets interested in the garbage collector, too. In the end the husband comes back home.

Ville Saukkonen’s direction was playful, absurd and some naked butts were also seen (the performance as for above 18 years only). The performers clearly put their souls in the performance and the audience had fun. You can say that everybody had their moment of glory, but of course, the main spotlight was on Angelika Klas as the wife.

I liked the opera a lot. It was a nicely relaxing and entertaining opera for weekend fun.
