LOGICOMIX
Turku conservatory performed
in Sigyn Hall an opera called Logicomix that was composed by Marko Autio. When
the opera is called a comics opera and the theme is the life of logic Bertrand
Russel, it is a bit hard to know what to expect. Even when I was reading the
programme leaflet before the start of the opera, I was suspicious, since the
story line sounded really messed up. But once again the actual opera turned out
to be clearer than the written story line. The opera consisted of cartoon like
short fragments of Russell’s life. The story started in 1939 and went back to
the childhood of Russell at this grandparent’s house and told the story of how
he fell in love with mathematics.
The music was not bad
at all; I especially liked the big role of the percussion instruments. Akseli
Vanamo, who sang the role of young Russell, did well in the leading role, but otherwise
the level of the performers varied a lot. Some singers that sang only a line or
two, obviously still have a long way to go to become professional singers, but
you do have to start somewhere. The opera also had rap parts, which first
surprised me, but then I almost started to wait for them. The
composer/conductor Marko Autio turned out to be quite a rapper, too!
Costumes and setting
were quite ok. I was a bit saddened by the fate of the books, but I suppose it
was part of the story. It was a great idea to show expressive comics on the background
together with clarifications (dates) of the story. All in all, I must say that
it was an opera worth watching and the young group definitely earned credit for
an ambitious project.
