The Finnish Radio
Symphony Orchestra, The Savonlinna Opera Festival Choir and the soloists (Camilla
Tilling, Michelle Breedt, Tuomas Katajala and Nathan Berg) performed in the
Helsinki Music Centre Ludvig van Beethoven’s Missa solemnis. The previous time I
heard this work was almost a year ago by the Finnish National Opera Chorus and
I have to say that this performance sounded totally different, which is to be
expected, since the place and the performers were different.
The Savonlinna
Opera Festival Choir sparkled in the Music Centre. The young singers sang in such a balanced and
versatile manner this super difficult work that you couldn’t but admire them. To
me their star moment was Credo; it has lovely melodies, where the whole choir
was able to sing in vocal ranges and in ensemble and thus show their true
talent, which sounded absolutely incredible.
RSO’s performance was
also simply stunning. The parts, where violas and cellos played together
without violins were pure honey to the ear and the violin solo was fabulous. It
was so touching and lovely that it simply could not have become better. In the
end of the performance, you just wanted to yell “Da capo!”
My favourite soloist
was Tuomas Katajala, which most likely is no surprise to anyone who has been
reading my blog regularly. His voice suited Missa solemnis perfectly. Already
in the beginning, in Kyrie his crescendos made you shiver and he kept on going
on the same level. Katajala’s singing was insanely delicious and you could have
listened to it forever. The other soloists were also good, but Katajala rocked.
I can easily
understand why this evening was sold out quite quickly. A weekend cannot start
better than by listening to such artists. For Finnish viewers the performance will be shown in Yle Teema on the 24th and on Yle 1 on the 30th of September.
