Once again there was an interesting concert in the Pitäjänmäki village church, where the Scottish tenor Ian Honeyman sang both old and more modern music under the theme “Spring and Summer”. The oldest song was from mid -13th century (Svmer is icumen in) and the newest from 1998 (The Colour of Spring by Mark Hollis).
First of
all, I must say that despite his age Honeyman’s tenor is still in good working
order, but above all his is an excellent performer – a true showman. The set of
songs formed an amazingly good mix of spring and summer songs, even though you
might have difficulties to believe that songs from so different periods could
never fit together.
Honeyman partly
accompanied himself by piano and partly he was accompanied by Heidi Peltoniemi
(viola da gamba and cello) and Aapo Häkkinen (cembalo). It is always a pleasure
to listen to them playing.
At his best
Honeyman was in my opinion in the songs by Robert Burns – the Scottish national
poet (Ca’ the Yowes to Knowes, The Baks o’ Doon and A Red, Red Rose). He
absolutely pulled the listeners deep into the emotions of the songs and their
stories. It would have been worth a concert ticket just to hear those songs.
But Honeyman did great interpretations also of the other songs whether they
were baroque or more modern songs.
