Helsinki Baroque Orchestra brought to the Camerata Stage of the Helsinki Music Centre the Estonian orchestra Hortus Musicus for their 50-year anniversary concert. The director (violinist) of the orchestra Andres Mustonen told during the concert both about the pieces they played and a little bit about the history of the group.
The concert was divided to several blocks, which were under
one theme. They played music from the 14th century to present day
from different corners of the world. Some of the pieces were racy and suitable
for dancing and some were ardent and religious. The lyrics were printed in the programme
leaflet, but in some of the songs parts were left out in the performance and
all did not go in the same order as in the leaflet.
The soloists of the evening were soprano Jaanika Kuusik, tenor
Anto Õnnis, baritone Tõnis Kaumann and bass Riho Ridbeck, who
- except Kuusik – also played some instruments.
It can be said that it was possible to get some kind of an idea
of the vast programme and musical influences of the orchestra during the
evening. I liked almost all of the pieces, but my favourite was Claudio Monteverdi’s
“Lamento della Ninfa” from 1638. Kuusik’s solo in the beginning of the song was
stunning and the hypnotic repetition of the word “Miserella” of the other
singers during the song was mesmerizing.
