Every Finnish friend of opera must be grateful that Opera Box exists, since it produces one after one interesting works to the Finnish opera scene. This time they organized a so called “French Evening” in the Alexander Theater, where two short French operas were shown.
The first of them was Darius Milhaud’s “The Poor Sailor”,
which tells about a sailor who disappeared 15 years ago and whose wife, who has
become a prostitute because of poverty, is still waiting for him and hopes that
he has become rich during his absence. When the husband returns and wants to
test his wife in disguise, she kills him after she has seen his riches.
Ville Saukkonen’s direction was colourful, bloody and
brought out the French spirit of the opera. Laura Pyrrö as the wife of the sailor
did well and the final scene was surely etched to the spectators’ minds.
