Radio for the People in the Alminsali stage of the Finnish National Opera, the 30th of September, 2022

In Finland there is a radio programme called “Kansanradio” (Radio for the People), where anybody can call about their views on just about any issue. I have never listened to it, but I know it to be legendary. Seppo Pohjola has now composed an opera called ”Radio for the People”, where he has adapted calls from the programme.

The opera tells about the 98-year old Aili, who has moved to a nursing home. She reminisces about her life and listens to Kansanradio when getting to know an older artist from the same nursing home. They become friends. Aili and the people in her story are puppets (puppeteers Pia Kalenius and Timo Väntsi) and they do not sing.

The comments called to the programme are sung by soprano Tiina Vahevaara, baritone Sauli Tiilikainen and tenor Aki Alamikkotervo.

The opera is really funny and definitely worth seeing, if you happen to bump into it somewhere. The calls are full of gentle humour and the story of Aili is touching and hilarious. You can basically say that the theme of the opera is that life is not always so serious and there should always be left some room for humour.
