The second opera of the French Evening was Maurice Ravel’s “The French Hour”, which tells about the wife of a clockmaker, who after her husband has left for work, meets her young poet lover. But this time also a garbage collector (in the original story a muleteer) and a banker come to the house at the same time. The poet hides in a clock and the wife asks the garbage collector to move clocks from one room to another and tries in the meantime play with the poet, though he seems to be more interested in quoting poetry to her. The banker also hides in a clock and gets stuck in it. The poor wife doesn’t seem to find any calm moment for lovemaking and finally gets interested in the garbage collector, too. In the end the husband comes back home.
Ville Saukkonen’s direction was playful, absurd and some
naked butts were also seen (the performance as for above 18 years only). The performers
clearly put their souls in the performance and the audience had fun. You can
say that everybody had their moment of glory, but of course, the main spotlight
was on Angelika Klas as the wife.
I liked the opera a lot. It was a nicely relaxing and entertaining
opera for weekend fun.
