CIRCOPERA
The Finnish National Opera is performing Circopera, a sold out crossover spectacle of opera, circus and ballet a few times this autum. If you really want to see opera, this may not be the best venue to see it. We are talking more about an entertainment show, where opera plays a secondary role.
Of course it was
interesting to see Ville Rusanen walk down the wall and sing at the same time
Largo al factorum from the Barber of Seville or Hanna Rantala to sing in a
swing over the audience. Not to mention that Mika Pohjonen sang for a while
standing on his hands; that really was a surprise! But I think pretty much
everybody in the audience was looking more at the circus performances than
listening to the arias sung at the same time. There was actually so much going
on at the same time on the stage that it would take more than one visit to this
performance to grasp it all.
However, the circus
performances were quite good and I think the biggest favourite (based on the applause)
was the wheel of death of Gengis van Gool. It was rather breathtaking to see
him jumping on the wheel of death near the ceiling without any safety ropes of
nets. Seeing that cannot be recommended to people with weak heart.
The opera house itself
was decorated according to the circus theme; there was a banner over the
entrance and indoors there were balloons and even the balconies were decorated
with colourful lights. Quite nice for a change in our normally rather sterile
opera house.
It seemed to me that also the opera staff took eagerly
part to the performance. Special thanks must be given to technical crew, who
for once had a chance to come and bow to the audience. Really professional
people and they must be essential to guarantee a safe performance in Circopera!
