MISSA SOLEMNIS
The chorus and
orchestra of the Finnish National Opera performed Ludwig van Beethoven’s Missa
Solemnis in St. John’s Church in Helsinki on All Saints’ Day evening. The
choral performances of National Opera’s chorus have always been a positive
experience and this was no exception.
Missa Solemnis is an
interesting work, since it does not contain many “quiet” parts, but the chorus
has a chance to let the voices flow loud and clear. The soloists also don’t
have any separate arias, but they sing mostly ensemble either with each other
or with the chorus. So we really are talking about a choral work. And St. John’s
Church is a great place for such religious pieces. I keep on thinking what the
audience must have though when it heard the performance for the first time
almost two hundred years ago.
Even though the whole
performance was enjoyable, my personal favourite part was Angus Dei in the end.
It had in the beginning the rare solo beginning by Jyrki Korhonen (bass), to
which the chorus later joined. It really gave me shivers to listen to it. What a
way to end an evening!
