THE BARBER OF
SEVILLE
The Finnish National
Opera had a revival of The Barber of Seville by director Giancarlo del Monaco
from the 90’s. I have seen this opera numerous times in different opera houses,
so I might not have rushed to see it, except the singers tempted me. Count
Almaviva’s role was sung by my personal favourite Tuomas Katajala, Rosina by
excellent Rossini singer Victoria Yarovaya and Figaro by great Croatian singer Leon
Košavić.
I have to admit that
during the evening it was easy to be reminded why The Barber is so popular. The
music was beautiful and the arias extremely decorative and good singers really
made them sparkle. The production was to my taste occasionally a little bit too
much farce-like, but, of course, this opera is not a representative of opera
seria.
Costumes and setting
were quite nice. The story took place in a time that was left open, so white
wigs and tail coats were only seen on the opera staff, who carried the
furniture back and forth.
This opera suits – at least
with these singers – both to those who seek artful singing but also to those
who want to see lighter, entertaining stories. There are quite many performances
remaining, so tickets are still available.
