My weekend ended with another baroque performance. I have in my blog often written about young singers, but this time I am honouring more mature singers. Matti Remes (a tenor) celebrated his 75th birthday by singing in a baroque concert in the Myllypuro Church in Helsinki. This concert clearly proved that in addition to being a professional, one can have a fine hobby in singing at any age.
The theme of the evening was, as mentioned, baroque music in different eras and geographical areas. And the geographical area was rather vast, covering Europe from England and Italy to Central Europe via Russia and Finland. Matti Remes told me, when he sent the invitation to the concert that he wanted to present some less known baroque songs in the programme and that turned out to be an interesting concept. The piano accompanist was Galina Khimich, who also played a couple of solo numbers.
Personally I liked the songs of John Dowland the best. They were less decorative, but the atmosphere was intriguing. You also hear songs by female baroque composers rather seldom, so Barbara Strozzi’s “Che si può fare” was a treat.
Matti Remes will sing the same programme one more time in St. Catherine’s Church in Karjaa on Sunday the 30th of September at 6 p.m., so you can still hear these less known songs, if you are interested.
