A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S
DREAM
Sibelius Academy
performed Benjamin Britten’s opera A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Helsinki Music
Centre’s Sonore. Most people have probably seen some version of this story by Shakespeare,
either the play, the movie or the opera. The original story tell about fairies
and complications in falling in love, but Sibelius Academy had move the story
to a music festival and made the main characters either music stars or festival
guests. Not too bad a version of the opera.
Tytania was rather
soulless (out of the main characters), but unfortunately the whole role is
rather bleak, so it is relatively difficult to make anything out of it. Maiju
Vaahtoluoto, who sang Oberon, was able to create a deeper character and she was
actually surprisingly convincing as a man. Personally I liked the voice of
Samuli Takkula, whose voice radiated warmth in the role of Demetrius.
However, the funniest
part of the opera was the play within it, played by the mechanicals to the duke
and her bride. Especially Visa Kohva as Bottom had a chance to really show his
talent, but the other members of the crew also did well. Visa Kohva proved
during the whole opera performance that not only does he has a good voice, but
he also knows how to make comedy. He was a very convincing donkey, too!
The set and costumes were
very festival-like and the number of rubber boots was at times even a bit
hilarious.
There are still
several performances left, so I recommend you go and see the opera yourself.
