Cyrano de Bergerac in Estonia Theatre in Tallinn, the 10th of February, 2018

At last I managed to go and see Eino Tamberg’s opera ”Cyrano de Bergerac” in the Estonia Theatre. Tamberg composed the opera to the libretto of Jaan Kross already in 1974. The opera has been staged in Estonia several times. The version that is running now is from year 2005 and parts of stage setting and costumes are from the 1995 version. Tamberg’s Cyrano is one of the best known Estonian operas.

In the audience it was easy to see that the opera has been in the programme for quite a while. The performance was far from sold out and at least near me most of the audience was from Finland. It felt as if I had been home in Helsinki! But the audience present was happy with what they saw and heard and the performance got warm applause.

The story of Cyrano de Bergerac is well-known to many of us. There are several films made of it and also a few operas. In short the story is about Cyrano, who is a great poet and swordsman. He is secretly in love with his cousin Roxane, but does not think his love can be returned since his is so ugly. Roxane fancies young Christian’s good looks and thinks that she loves also his character, when Cyrano writes her letters on behalf of Christian. When Christian dies in the battle, Roxane enters a monastery, where Cyrano regularly visits her. In the end Roxane finds out who is the true writer of the letters and whom she thus actually loves – just when Cyrano dies by the wounds received in an ambush.

The stage setting of the opera is very sparse, but enough for the story. Costumes were a bit candy-like epoque, but all in all they both suited the opera. And the balcony scene, where Roxane sung out of a loge, was very sweet. This opera can truly be called good entertainment. Music was cheery, performance eventful and emotional. The scene in the end, where nuns were singing latin prayers was very impressive.

The group of singers was also well chosen. I liked both Cyrano himself (Rauno Eip) and Roxane (Kadri Kipper), but perhaps my favorite was count de Guiche (Jassi Zahharov). Mehis Tiits in the role of Christianin was also a positive surprise. He may not have sung totally mistake free, but the overall performance was positive.

I can recommend the opera for anyone who is looking for an entertaining performance. Even though the end is not exactly happy, as a whole the opera is more light than dark.

Marcus Antonius ja Keopatra Turun ruotsalaisessa teatterissa, 9.2.2018

Åbo Svenska Teatern toi suurelle näyttämölleen Ville Saukkosen ohjaaman Johann Adolph Hassen säveltämän barokkioopperan Marc’Antonio e Cleopatra (Marcus Antonius ja Kleopatra).

Musiikista vastasi Kuninkaantien muusikot konserttimestari Anthony Marinin johdolla.

Marc Antony and Cleopatra in the Swedish Theatre in Turku, the 9th of February, 2018

The Swedish Theatre in Turku (Åbo Svenska Teatern) brought to its main scene Marc’Antonio e Cleopatra (Marc Antony and Cleopatra), a baroque opera composed by Johann Adoph Hasse and directed by Ville Saukkonen. A great thanks to them! It is a shame that Hasse’s operas have not been shown in Finland before. Even though this opera was only performed three times and despite its name on a rather small scene, we should all hope that it will get a second run e.g. in the Alexander Theatre in Helsinki, which would suit it perfectly.

Hasse’s opera is a so called serenata which means that it has 2-4 singers and the length is shorter than the one of full length baroque operas. This opera lasted (with the interval) only two hours and fifteen minutes. The story is about the last days of Marc Antony and Cleopatra before their suicides.

One would have recognized the opera’s director as Ville Saukkonen even without pre-knowledge, because the setting was simple (only a few boxes) and there were video projections – as always – in the background and there was also a dancer. I have to admit that I did not pay a lot of attentions to the projections, since the singing took almost all my attention, but the dance of Sami Saikkonen (as the god Anubis) was intriguing. And in the tribute (the finale) to the rulers of the time (typical for such serenatas) Saikkonen did superb shows as the king and his wife.

The music of the opera was played by Kuninkaantien muusikot lead by their concert master Anthony Marini. Kuninkaantien muusikot uses periodic instruments which gave a truly graceful tune to the opera. And when this was all performed in a lovely old-fashioned theatre full of golden decorations and red velvet, the environment itself attuned you to baroque music.

The role of Cleopatra was sung with aplomb by Tuuli Lindeberg, one of my favorite sopranos, who once again lived up to all the expectations. The role cannot be called easy to sing, but Lindeberg’s agile, multifaceted and strong voice managed even the most difficult parts without a glitch. Her voice alone was worth a trip to Turku! The role of Marc Antony was sung by counter tenor Teppo Lampela, who also sung well. Perhaps he was not quite as glamorous as Lindeberg, but he did a great job anyway.

In addition to great singing, the main characters also acted their roles splendidly. Personally I liked the intensity of the first act more than the second act’s road to the suicides. The passion between the couple sparkled in their voices and facial expressions. The small size of the theatre gave the audience a ringside view to their feelings. One of the high points of the opera were also the duets of Lindeberg and Lampela. Their voices sounded so beautiful together that they filled my head even on the long ride home!

Itse oopperatalo muistuttaa varsin paljon eurooppalaisia esikuviaan.

La belle Hélène in the Süreyya Opera House in Istanbul, the 3rd of February, 2018

I spent an extremely interesting weekend in Istanbul by getting to know its historical sites. But a weekend in a foreign city would, of course, not have been complete without a visit to a local opera. Turkish National Opera (and Ballet) have two scenes in Istanbul: Atatürk Cultural Center in the European side and a smaller house Süreyya Opera House in the Asian side, in Kadiköy. I visited Süreyya, which was built in 1927, but was taken over by the National Opera only in 2007 after extensive restauration works. The trip from my hotel in the old town (in Sultanahmet) to the opera was longish, but absolute worth the effort: first a trip to the ferry terminal in Eminönü, then across the Bosphorus to Kadiköy and a nice walk to the opera.

The Opera House itself looks a lot like its European models. The interior has some art deco features and the main hall is decorated with frescos. Even though the seats are – fittingly – red velvet, they are actually very comfortable and there is plenty of legroom, so the restauration was really well done.

The performance I saw was Jacques Offenbach’s La belle Hélène (The Beautiful Helen), an opéra bouffe (or operetta), which tells the story of Paris and Helen of Troy before the Trojan wars. The opera was performed in Turkish with Turkish texts, but fortunately I had anticipated the possibility and got acquainted with the libretto before my trip, so that I grasped the story rather well, even if I did not understand the spoken parts. The director had possibly made some adaptations to the story, since the original score definitely did not contain “Are you lonesome tonight” that Paris was singing for a bit in this version.

The setting of the piece was simple: a divan and some steps together with occasional chairs and a table. The costumes were colourful and partly bling (Helen’s dresses were covered with sequins). I think they both suited the production very well.

Offenbach’s music is very beautiful and I would have loved to hear more of it than this piece had to offer. The same goes actually to the performance of the best singers. The singer of the main character, Helen of Troy (Hande Soner Ûrben) was breathtaking and I wish she had had more to sing. Also Cenk Biyik in the role of her husband Ménélas and Alper Göceri in the role of Agamemnon made a great impression on me. It seems that Turkey has plenty of great opera singers! I can honestly recommend anybody visiting Turkey to get tickets to the local operas, too (Turkish State Opera and Ballet has opera houses in six different cities).

Viron historia. Säikähdyksestä syntynyt kansa. Tallinnan Estonia-teatterissa 21.1.2018

Oopperavuosi 2018 alkoi minun osaltani upouudella virolaisella oopperalla Viron historia. Teoshan on osa ns.

Estonian History. A Nation Born of Shock. in the Estonia Theatre in Tallinn, the 21st of January, 2018

The opera year of 2018 started in my case with a brand new Estonian opera “Estonian History. A Nation Born of Shock.” The opera was made for the anniversary of Estonia and it is without doubt a rather unusual performance, which was also easy to guess beforehand since the early descriptions of the opera were rather peculiar. The production is a part of so called MIM-project, which is an interartistic project that has produced several performances in the past few years.

The story of the opera is a story of the birth of the Estonian nation, a crazy mixture of a meteorite that dropped to Saaremaa 800 B.C., sound waves, a church, a book written by modern Estonia’s first president Lennart Meri, an ancient Creek female explorer and the Estonian Song Festival. Acts jump back and forth in different times and places from desert to ancient Athens, to Tartu, Moscow and Saaremaa. I think the story was a sort of comedy, since the Estonian audience laughed a lot during the performance, though I did not understand even half the jokes (they obviously referred to some Estonian events that I – as a foreigner – had never even heard of).

There was all the time some background music that switched between electronic music (clacking, rustle, squeaks) and Arabic influenced tones. Most of the performance was spoken and there were only a few soloist songs and a bit more songs by the opera chorus. It may be a bit stretched to call this production an opera, but it was pretty interesting to see – just after the Finnish anniversary – how the Estonians celebrate their anniversary. The music of the opera was, as such, quite interesting and suited the performance.

Even though this opera was made for the 100th anniversary of Estonia, interestingly enough, Finland also was involved. In the middle of the performance a voice started reading the Finnish national epic “Kalevala” in Finnish. I honestly didn’t first believe my ears, when the language changed, but I was only a bit confused, how I suddenly started to understand Estonian so well (that part was without any translation in the texting machine).

MIM-project had invested especially much on the costumes, set design and lights and I really liked them. Especially the battle between the local Saaremaa people and the crusaders was spectacular.

There were so few songs in the performance that it is very difficult to say anything about them, except that the singers did quite well. Especially Juuli Lill in the role of Pythea was good.

And a short commercial in the end of this story. Last August I saw Jukka Linkola's opera Abraham's banquet in Liminka about which I also wrote in my blog. Now the opera is coming to Helsinki! So for those of you, who would like to see it and travelling to Liminka was too much, set course towards Helsinki Music Centre on the 22nd/23rd of February.
