La Clemenza di Tito in the Helsinki Music House (Sonore), the 13th of April, 2018

The new opera class of Sibelius Academy performs traditionally as their first whole opera some opera by Mozart. This time they had ended up to La Clemenza di Tito, Mozart’s last opera. It is not his most performed opera and its arias are not the best known, but neither is it an opera that deserves to be forgotten.

The director of the opera is Katariina Lahti. She has placed the opera in an undefined era with relatively androgynous people, which suited this work rather well. The costumes design by Anna Sinkkonen was almost neutral and the set design of Fabian Nyberg was based on doors and a few selected pieces of furniture. Good work!

The story of the opera tells about the emperor Tito of Rome, who is looking for a new wife. Vitella yearns to become that woman, but Tito chooses Servilia, who is the secret beloved of Annio. This angers Vitella and she persuades Sesto, who is in love with her, to kill Tito. When Tito finds out that Annio and Servilia love each other, he chooses Vitella as his bride-to-be instead. Meanwhile Sesto has already attacked Tito (of course, he stabs someone else by mistake) and feels deep guilt of his deed. Sesto is sentenced to death and Vitella confesses her part in the plot, but Titus decides to have mercy on them both.

The orchestra of the evening was the Lohja Philharmonic Orchestra and the choir was Somnium Ensemble – earlier unknown to me, but a positive surprise.

This opera class seems to contain several interesting singers, who hopefully will develop in the years to come to even more mature soloists. One of the new interesting voices was Rachel McIntosh in the role of Sesto. Her aria “Parto, parti, ma tu, ben mio” (perhaps the best known aria of this opera) together with a clarinet was enjoyable. I also liked the voice of Henri Uusitalo in the role of Publio. His performance may not have been totally free of mistakes, but it was definitely promising. Ruut Mattila, who sang the role of Annio, also has a beautiful voice and her duet ”Ah, perdona al primo affetto” with Servilia (Elizaveta Rimketitch) was great. Minna-Leena Lahti as Vitellia was not yet at her best in the beginning of the opera, but she managed to open up her voice during the intermission and her aria in the second act sounded already very good.

The opera has still four performances during this week, so I definitely recommend buying tickets from Ticketmaster and going to the Helsinki Music House to listen to it. I am already looking forward to their next operas to see how the group will develop in the years to come.

Rita Vapaan taiteen tilassa (Helsinki), 10.4.2018

Tekorintakarvat olivat kuin piste i:n päälle.

Rita in the Space for Free Arts in Helsinki, the 9th of April, 2018

Rita, one of Gaetano Donizetti’s short operas, has not been performed before in Finland. Donizetti himself did not see it either during his lifetime, since its first performance took place only after his death, in 1860.

Rita is the mistress of a small inn and in her second marriage with Beppe. Rita’s first husband, who used to hit her, died at sea. Because Rita does not want to be oppressed anymore, so she has started hitting Beppo. The first husband, Gasparo, did not die, but returns to get Rita’s death certificate, since he has thought she died in a fire. Now the husbands start quarrelling about who will have to stay married to Rita. After various competitions Gasparo gets to rip the marriage certificate and Beppe and Rita continue their marriage happily and committed to non-violence.

Juulia Tapola (director) has created a small jewel of an opera, which made the audience laugh out loud (if you can ever say that domestic violence is funny). All the singing parts were sung in Italian, but the spoken dialogues were a nice mixture of Finnish and Swedish. This solution worked surprisingly well and the dialogue, that the work group had written based on Linnea Kiukka’s translation, brought the slightly outdated opera to modern era. The performance was held in the Space for Free Arts, that is in an air-raid shelter in Sörnäinen (in Helsinki), and the Italian style set design and a bit caricature type costume design (Juulia Tapola and the work group) suited both the opera and the surroundings.

The opera lasted a bit over an hour and it had only four persons: Rita (Aurora Marthens), Beppe (Matias Haakana), Gasparo (Tiitus Ylipää) and Bortolina – a spoken role (Stella Laine). An orchestra of eight musicians conducted by Emilia Hoving was responsible for the music. Donizetti’s music was charming and even though the orchestra was rather small, it was just right for such a small room as this corner of the shelter.

The singers made nice, funny performances. The voice of Aurora Marthens rang beautifully, though the ”attacks” of laugher in the beginning were rather too frequent. Matias Haakana’s voice was a bit wobbly in the beginning, but in the end he turned into a rather sure footed (read: voiced) hero. Thinking back his metamorphosis almost suited the opera’s story of a man who turns from the lummox of a man (Rita’s words, not mine) to nice husband material. Tiitus Ylipää was in my opinion the funniest character of the evening, even though in real life he would have been a true jerk. Ylipää both acted well and sung nicely. The fake chest hair was a cherry on the cake. Stella Laine’s waitress Bortolina was also an excellent performance.

So, I definitely need to thank the work group for bringing this, unseen in Finland, opera to stage. It is great that young artists have the energy and ambition to take risks and show different types of work to larger audiences.

Trubaduuri Suomen Kansallisoopperassa, 5.4.2018

Tarinan siemenet on kylvetty jo ennen oopperan tapahtumien alkua. Lunan kreivin toisen pojan kiroamisesta syytetty mustalaisnainen on poltettu roviolla ja sammuneesta roviosta on löydetty myös pienen lapsen palanut ruumis. Lapsen uskotaan olleen kyseinen poika, jonka mustalaisnaisen tytär on siepannut.

Lavastuskonseptista vastannut Joan Anton Rechi ja valaistuksesta vastannut Albert Faura olivat yhdessä luoneet yksinkertaisen, synkähkön taustan raa’an veriselle tarinalle.

Il Trovatore in the Finnish National Opera, the 5th of April, 2018

Giuseppe Verdi’s ”Il Trovatore” is one of the classic operas, that you should regularly see. My last Trovatore was a while back, so I was quite interested in seeing in the Finnish National Opera the joint production of Teatre del Liceu and Olvideon Teatro Campoamor.

“Il Trovatore’s” story is often considered to be one of the dumbest in the operatic world. The seeds of the story have been sown before the opera takes place. A gypsy woman, accused of cursing the other son of Count di Luna, is burnt at a stake. A body of a small child is also found from the ashes and it is believed to be the son, who was abducted by the gypsy’s daughter. The opera takes place 15 years later. Young couple in love (Leonora and Manrico) and Count di Luna form the three sides of a triangle in the middle of a civil war. Manrico’s mother, Azucena, is the daughter of the gypsy woman burnt at the stake and she is obsessed by her need to revenge the death of her mother. Count di Luna finally captures Azucena and accuses her of the death of her brother. When Manrico rushes to rescue his mother, he is also imprisoned. Then Leonora promises to become Luna’s own (he is insanely in love with her) and in exchange he agrees to free Manrico. In reality Leonora does not want Luna, but takes poison to kill herself. When Luna realizes that Leonora has betrayed him, he kills Manrico. At that point Azucena inform him, that he has just killed his own brother. The baby burnt at the stake was actually Azucena’s own son. So just an everyday story that could happen to all of us.

If the story is complete fluff, the music of the opera is in its own class. “Il Trovatore” is known for its numerous arias that follow each other almost without breaks. And the arias are no second class tunes, but first class Verdi. You definitely don’t fall asleep during this almost three hour long opera.

Joan Anton Rechi, who has created the stage design concept and Albert Faura, who has designed the lights, have together created a simple, darkish background to a bloody story. In my opinion they have managed to create suitable surroundings for an opera, whose message is that the circle of revenge destroys everybody. Rechi himself (he is also the director) has said that he has used as an inspiration to the direction Francisco de Goya’s series of etchings “The Disasters of War” (which were also seen in the background videos). And it is true that the etchings stressed wonderfully the cruelty of war and the fatality of revenge. Goya himself actually also walked around the stage as an eye witness.

But ”Il Trovatore” is above all an opera of excellent music and when the performers are world class, it becomes a true masterpiece. The biggest star of the performance was Elena Stikhina in the role of Leonora. Divine voice and stunning performance. Unfortunately Manrico (the hero) was rather stiff on the stage (and didn’t really look like a charming hero, either), so that the credibility of boundless love did suffer a bit. The second gorgeous performer was in my opinion Sari Nordqvist in the role of Azucena. Splendid, strong voice and she really became Azucena on the stage. Even though the spectator’s reason fought against the idea of revenge, it was impossible not to understand the hatred of the suffering daughter. The Finnish National Opera chorus also made a stellar performance.

L'Africaine Frankfurtin oopperassa, 31.3.2018

L’Africainen juoni on varsinainen sekametelisoppa.

L'Africaine in the Frankfurt Opera House, the 31st of March, 2018

I used to travel to Frankfurt regularly for business some years ago and more often than not I also used to visit on those trips Frankfurt opera. Now there has been a longish gap in those trips, but after seeing “The North Star” by Giacomo Meyerbeer in the Helsinki Music House in the autumn, I simply had to travel to Frankfurt in the beginning of my winter holiday to see his ”L’Africaine”. Franfurt Opera House may not be the most exciting looking building in the world, but it suits operas well.

The story of L’Africaine is (too) full of happenings. The main character is Vasco da Gama, who is in love with Ines, who also loves him. Vasco ends up in prison, because he manages to anger the leading elite and Ines saves him from prison by marrying his contestant Don Pedro. Don Pedro leaves for the trip towards the unknown that Vasco actually wanted to take. He takes with him the slave Selika, who – surpise, surprise – is also in love with Vasco and is, by the way, a daughter of an African king. Vasco follows Don Pedro. In the end (and lots of things happen meanwhile and there is quite a big bunch of other people involved) all the travellers are killed but Vasco and Ines. Some more twists and turns later Selika helps Vasco and Ines escape and then commits suicide. And all this squeezed to just under five hours.

In this version the story had been moved to outer space and the Africans had been made blue aliens. It actually worked rather well, when you managed to forget the occasional conflicts between what you saw and what you heard (space suits versus sound of waves on sea). I have seen much crazier opera adaptations in Germany, so this was nothing compared to them.

Meyerbeer’s music was again wonderful and when I walked back to the hotel after the opera, the music still echoed in my head. The opera could have been slightly shorter, but music was beautiful

The stage design and costumes design were all about space (both by Rainer Sellmaier) and they were both ok. Though I do have to say that the blue leotards of the aliens didn’t actually flatter any body type.

The casting of the opera was magnificent. There were no weak links. I liked a lot Kirsten Mulligan, who sang the role of Ines, but my absolute favourite was Irene Roberts, who sang the role of Selika from the side. The actual Selika – Claudia Mahnke – had fallen ill, so on the stage she was substituted by Caterina Panti Liberovici (very well, by the way) and the role was sung by Irene Roberts. And she sang incredibly well this difficult role. I was spellbound and so was the rest of the audience, too. I am quite certain that this will not be her last Selika.
