Billy Budd in the Finnish National Opera, the 30th of April, 2022

One of the opera highlights of this spring was the performance of ”Billy Budd” by Benjamin Britten in the Finnish National Opera. It was a joint production of the Norwegian National Opera and the Polish National Opera. The libretto was by E.M. Forster and it was based on Herman Melville’s novel. This work is rather rare in the sense that it is a big opera but does not have any female roles.

The original opera is happening in the 1790’s, when England is fighting against post-revolutionary France. In the beginning of the opera Captain Vere reminisces his time on the ship “Indomitable”. Many of the crewmen have been shanghaied to the vessel, but young Billy Budd has volunteered, and the rest of the crew actually like him. However, the master of arms John Claggart loathes him and tries to frame him for breaking the rules. In the middle of it all Billy Budd gets really angry and hits Claggart, who falls and dies. The officers of the ship condemn him to death. Captain Vere could have saved him, but he does not and this decision he cannot forget.

In this version of “Billy Budd” the happenings are on a vessel that is resembling a submarine and the historic era is also unclear. That didn’t have a lot of significance, since the universal themes of humanity and guilt in this work are understandable in any environment and era.

I kind of liked Annemarie Woods’ set design, even though it was necessarily partly referential. There was no intermission in the opera and the change of scenery was accomplished by raising and lowering the stage, so that the same stage functioned as a house and a submarine/ship.

The opera has a lot of roles and there were many small, inspiring moments in the performance. The main role of Billy Buddi was sung by Ville Rusanen by aplomb. But perhaps the greatest impression to me was made by Timo Olavi Riihonen who sang the role of John Claggart. His voice rang superbly, and he literally stole the stage in his scenes.

Concert in the foyer of the Finnish National Opera, the 30th of April, 2022

Singers of the Finnish National Opera regularly perform also in free concerts in the foyer of the opera house. The popularity of the concerts has grown year by year and also this eve of the First of May the foyer was packed with eager friends of classical music.

The concert was begun by basses Juha Pikkarainen and Marko Nykänen with the duet of Rigoletto and Sparafucile from Giuseppe Verdi’s opera “Rigoletto”. It was a charming performance. Pikkarainen continued with Rigoletto’s aria ”Pari siamo”. After the aria mezzosoprano Monika-Evelin sung ”Lilacs” by Sergei Rachmaninoff and ”Not a word, o my friend”  by Pyotr Tchaikovsky. Both Liiv’s interpretations were rather sorrowful, even though Tchaikovsky’s song – at least its words – are a lot about happiness. The Russian theme continued when Heikki Hattunen sang Lensky’s aria ”Kuda, kuda” from Tchaikovsky’s opera Eugene Onegin. This aria is one of my favourite arias by Tchaikovsky, but it requires an excellent tenor to hit me hard. Hattunen’s voice is not the type of tenor that usually makes me swoon, but he made an excellent interpretation of the aria, so I was actually very happy. Next, we jumped to German music, when Marko Nykänen sand “Meresleuchten” and “Heimlickeit” by Carl Loewe. These songs did not touch me much and I started to look forward to Leonora’s aria “O mio Fernando” from the Gaetano Donizetti’s opera “La Favorita” by Polina Liiv. She has a very beautiful voice, but the performance itself remained soulless.

After the interval baritone Dong-Hoon Han sang three songs from Franz Schubert’s “Winterreise”. Do I even need to say that after the excellent performances of ”Winterreise” that I have heard lately, this one did not really interest me much. Next soprano My Johansson sang Amelia’s aria “Ecco l’orrido campo” from Giuseppe Verdi’s opera “A masked ball”. Johansson’s interpretation was not yet perfect, but it was promising enough that I look forward to hearing her more. Then soprano Tatjana Romanova-Vorotsova sang the aria ”Casta Diva” from Vincenzo Bellini’s opera ”Norma”. This aria is extremely difficult, but Romanova-Vorontsova’s performance was good. She eased it a bit by breathing in the middle of some phases, but in such a light concert it was permissible. The last piece of the concert was Polina Liiv’s performance of Charlotte’s aria “Va! Laisse couler mes larmes” from Jules Massenet’s opera ”Werther”. This interpretation was just as soulless as her first aria. But all in all the concert was quite nice and an interesting experience, which encourages one to go and see the future concerts, too.

Ecce Cor Meum in Kattilahalli in Helsinki, the 23rd of April, 2022

Many may be surprised to hear that Paul McCartney, the ex-Beatles member, has in addition to pop music also composed classical music. The Juvenalia Choir, Oratoriokören (Oratorio Choir) and Helsinki Metropolitan Orchestra and their soloist Mari Palo performed his oratorio “Ecce Cor Meum” in Kattilahalli in Suvilahti. I had never been to Kattilahalli before, so that alone was interesting. The venue is definitely big enough for such performances, but the pillars of the hall did act as obstacles if you wanted to see everything wherever you sat. The acoustics was good at least in the front rows, but before the concert I heard a few knowledgeable sounding people mention that the experience is not as good behind the first rows. Who knows!

The first version of the oratorio was performed in 2001, but after that McCartney expanded it and it got its final form in 2006. The piece consists of five parts (Spiritus, Gratia, Interlude, Musica and Ecce Cor Meum).

You can hear McCartney’s background in the composition and personally I wasn’t that impressed by his music. It wasn’t bad as such, but neither was it very memorable or touching. The choirs and the orchestra did well lead by the conductor Sasha Mäkelä and I also liked the lights by Jan-Erik Pihström that were reflected on the wall behind the choirs. The soloist Mari Palo sang beautifully, when you were able to discern her voice. She was often signing together with the choirs and then at least I wasn’t able to hear her. But at least I can say that now I have heard this oratorio by McCartney!

Turun Filharmoninen Orkesteri Turun tuomiokirkossa, 30.4.2022

Todella hieno teos.

Toisena osana konserttia esitettiin Giacomo Puccinin Messa di Gloria.

Turku Philharmonic Orchestra in the Turku Cathedral, the 30th of April, 2022

It is quite usual that there are tons of different type of concerts in churches around Easter like oratorios and passions. This time I travelled on Good Friday to Turku to the concert of Turku Philharmonic Orchestra. It was kept in the Turku Cathedral, which by its his history is probably one of the most memorable concert venues in Finland. The first church in the same place was built in the last few years of the 13th century.

The soloists of the concert were tenor Markus Nykänen and baritone Arttu Kataja. The concert also had two choirs: Chorus Cathedralis Aboensis and Chamber Choir of the Turku Conservatory. The conductor was Tōnu Kaljuste.

The concert was actually rather short, less than an hour. The first piece was a relatively modern composition: ”Trisagion” by Arvo Pärt from the 1990’s. It was performed for the first time in Ilomantsi and it is dedicated to the local Greek orthodox parish. I was a bit sceptic beforehand about the piece, but it turned out to be perfectly to my taste. The music was subtle and extremely emotional. For some strange reason I kept on thinking about rough, but impressive nature (e.g. Outer Hebrides) in the spirit of Scandic Noir. A great piece of music!

The second part of the concert consisted of Giacomo Puccini’s “Messa di Gloria”. I assumed beforehand that this would be more typical ecclesiastical music, but it was actually rather operatic. Lots of times it felt as if I was listening to a Puccini opera. The role of the soloists was not significant, though, so you did not get any true feeling of operatic arias. Nykänen did sing a bit more, but Katajala basically just popped in front of the audience to sing a couple of lines. Fortunately they both sang really well, so even such short performances were gratifying.

If the soloists did not have a lot to sing, the choirs had a chance to shine and shine they did as the true stars of this concert. Excellent preformance and definitely worth a trip to Turku.
