Messiah by The Fabulous Bäckström Brothers in Alminsatu, the 2nd of November, 2016

MESSIAH

The Fabulous Bäckström Brothers’ guest visit to Alminsali with their musical theatre production Messiah made me feel really good. Petri and Jouni Bäckström have both had classical singing training, which you can hear, but they also have exceptional comical talent. Even though music is part of the performance, even opera arias, it plays a minor role. Even the performers themselves didn’t seem to consider it super important – so heavy was the vibrato of e.g. Petri Bäckström.

The production was in a successful way based on the variety of facial expressions and movements of the brothers. Petri Bäckström’s Virgin Mary was hilarious: a big bald guy playing a young innocent girl was both funny and in an exaggerative way credible. The audience also became a part of the performance in a good/suitable way.

Set and especially costumes proved that with the help of small things you can create big illusions: move the bowtie to the forehead and Petri becomes Mary!

Actually the only extra element in the performance was Reetta Ristimäki who played the role of the mother. But perhaps her arias gave the brothers a little breathing room in an otherwise rather hectic show.

I can warmly recommend Messiah for everybody who wishes a good laugh. The last date is the 17th of December, so there is still plenty of time to buy a ticket http://www.lippu.fi.
