VOICE BOX
Miika Hyytiäinen’s
work (part of his studies in doctoral school DocMus) Voice Box was rather
interesting a performance. It was short (less than one hour) and according to
the programme an opera – or perhaps a Singspiel or a Gesamtkunstwerk or
experimental music theatre. Well, whatever, it was anyway an interesting work
about areas of voice. I think that a major part of the audience started latest
during the performance to think about what is voice and what are its areas.
Mia Heikkilä in the
main role of professor M.H. did superb work and really showed the possibilities
and abilities of her voice. Jacintha Damström as the assistant and Maija Parko
as the pianist also did good work. The composer himself performed on the videos
and in the final crescendo of the performance. The setting was based on boxes
as is suitable for a work called Voice Box. Costumes were rather simple
including the final Fuck the fach T -shirts.
Miika Hyytiäinen was
the composer and responsible also for the concept and the libretto. I think he
did well in combining an important theme to humoristic attitude. The main role
was anyway played by music and the joy within. Even though people have built
walls in music and continue doing so, the most important thing is music itself.
I can well imagine that the group of people involved in this piece really had
fun while creating it.
As a funny detail I
can mentioned that it was quite intriguing to listen to an opera called Voice
Box in a place called Black Box. That is a lot of boxes!
