The Queen of Sheba in the Hungarian National Opera (Erkel Theatre), the 20th of May, 2017

THE QUEEN OF SHEBA

The opera Queen of Sheba by Karl Golmark hasn’t been shown in Finland that often, so I was happy to get a chance to see it in the Hungarian National Opera. They had produced the opera on the 100th anniversary of the composer’s death. Goldmark was born in Hungary and even though this opera was composed in Vienna, what would be a better place to see it than Budapest.

The story is a triangle drama between the Queen of Sheba, a young courtier Assad enthralled by her and Sulamith, Assad’s betrothed, the high priest’s daughter. The production was a rather traditional opera story containing great feelings and some oriental flavoured exoticism in music. The music of Goldmark does contain some Wagnerian influences, but it is definitely not a Wagner copy.

In all its traditional tones, the production was in my opinion successful. Visually the opera was wonderful: the setting by Evá Széndrenyi was solid and the costumes by Anikó Németh were really showy – even though the skirts of the ladies in the court were slightly weird.  There were also a lot of dances in the production. My personal favourites were the exotic animals of the court of the queen. It wasn’t always possible to follow everything that happened on the stage in the big scenes, so also for that reason you could easily see this opera twice.

The production can definitely boast of having found good performers for the opera. My personal favourite was Erika Gál in the role of the Queen of Sheba. She has a lovely luminous mezzo voice, which was a pleasure to listen to.  Eszter Sümegi, who sang the role of Sulamith, has a very strong voice and only on the second half of the opera she had a chance to show also her ability to sing lighter phrasing, which really caressed your ears. I also admired the singing technique of Zoltán Kelemen in the role of King Salomon. And last, but not least, I would also like to give credit to the chorus of the Hungarian National opera for their good work.

Based on this production I can warmly recommend to all Budapest visitors to spend an evening in the Hungarian National Opera. There are great singers and interesting productions to hear and see for different tastes!

Voice Box Musiikkitalon Black Boxissa, 18.5.2017

VOICE BOX

VOICE BOX

Miika Hyytiäinen’s work (part of his studies in doctoral school DocMus) Voice Box was rather interesting a performance. It was short (less than one hour) and according to the programme an opera – or perhaps a Singspiel or a Gesamtkunstwerk or experimental music theatre. Well, whatever, it was anyway an interesting work about areas of voice. I think that a major part of the audience started latest during the performance to think about what is voice and what are its areas.

Mia Heikkilä in the main role of professor M.H. did superb work and really showed the possibilities and abilities of her voice. Jacintha Damström as the assistant and Maija Parko as the pianist also did good work. The composer himself performed on the videos and in the final crescendo of the performance. The setting was based on boxes as is suitable for a work called Voice Box. Costumes were rather simple including the final Fuck the fach T -shirts.

Miika Hyytiäinen was the composer and responsible also for the concept and the libretto. I think he did well in combining an important theme to humoristic attitude. The main role was anyway played by music and the joy within. Even though people have built walls in music and continue doing so, the most important thing is music itself. I can well imagine that the group of people involved in this piece really had fun while creating it.

As a funny detail I can mentioned that it was quite intriguing to listen to an opera called Voice Box in a place called Black Box. That is a lot of boxes!

Erityisesti on pakko mainita Paris, jonka roolin lauloi Taru Haili. Todella hyvin hallussa oleva laulutekniikka, ääni kaikui tasaisen varmana koko oopperan ajan.

Paride ed Elena in Siltasali (Jyväskylä), the 3rd of May, 2017

PARIDE ED ELENA

When there came an opportunity to see - performed for the first time in Finland - Paride ed Elena by Christoph Willibald Gluck, of course, I had to travel to Jyväskylä, where the local University of Applied Sciencies with some outside help did a production of this opera. And I must say the opera was really worth the visit to Jyväskylä.

The storyline is about what happened before the Trojan War, how Paris seduces Helen, so the story itself is not exactly spell-bounding. There aren’t that many people in the opera, but the three main characters get a lot of fine music to sing.

The production was made by Ville Saukkonen, who was also responsible for the setting and the costumes. I think he succeeded in all of them. The production breathed and even though the setting and costumes were rather simple, they suited the opera. Lights by Arto Saarelainen were partly good, but sometimes, at least I, hoped for more light on the singing characters.

And the singers! I was absolutely flabbergasted that it had been possible to find so great singers for such a challenging opera. Especially I have to mention Taru Haili in the role of Paris. Absolutely fabulous singing technique, her voice never faltered and she was in control of it all the time. The other impressive singer was Miia Saari in the role of Helen. When both these main characters, in addition to beautiful singing, also managed to sink deep feelings into their singing, the over two hours spent listening to the opera practically flew by.

Only the Sound Remains Kansallisoopperassa, 29.4.2017

ONLY THE SOUND REMAINS

Maaginen. Lumoava. Mystinen.
Peter Sellarsin ohjaus on todella upea.

Only the Sound Remains in the Finnish National Opera, the 29th of April, 2017

ONLY THE SOUND REMAINS

Magical. Enchanting. Mystical. I have seen all Kaija Saariaho’s four operas and this was is without doubt the best of them in my opinion. The opera consists of two parts, that are based on Japanese n͞o-plays (Always Stong and Feather Mantle). Personally I liked the first one even more than the second one.

Peter Sellar’s production was fabulous. It was easy to see that the team had worked together several times, since the music, things on the stage and the lights functioned so well together. Saariaho’s music was pure magic. There was no huge orchestra, but a kantele, a flute, percussion and a string quartet Meta4. And of course, electronic sound design was part of the opera. The vocal quartet functioned sometimes as a teller and sometimes as a person in the opera. During the opera the kantele and the flute took part in the discussion with the main characters. And electronic sound design created dream-like atmosphere with the help of echo. Shadows, created by lights (James F. Ingalls) grew and shrank as if there were additional persons on the stage.

Two main characters were sung by bass-baritone Davone Tines and countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo. Both were excellent but especially Roth Costanzo’s voice suited the role on the dot. He was a spirit in both the parts and his electronically enhanced voiced definitely created a ghostlike effect.

Actually I can say that in this opera there were no weak links and the whole team can be said to have done an excellent job. This production continues now to new opera houses and if you happen to bump into it somewhere, I truly recommend buying a ticket.
