The Cunning Vixen in the Finnish National Opera, the 20th of October, 2017

I saw Leoš Janáček’s ”The Cunning Vixen” already in 2015, when it had its first night in the National Opera. Now I was offered a chance to see it again and I thought, that it would be nice to revisit the opera.

The absolutely highest point of this opera is the costume and set design. The visual design is by Klaus Haapaniemi (execution Mark Väisänen). Visually the opera was a typical Haapaniemi work: full of colours and fairy tale like forms, which suited this opera really well. On the stage there were, in addition to foxes, a lot of other animals and it was interesting to follow them, even if you weren’t that keen on the music itself. The set design also suited this opera/fairy tale. Lights (Immo Karaman, Matti Leinonen) were also beautifully adapted to the story. They were not very bright, which occasionally frustrated me, because I would have liked to see the costume details better. Fortunately during the final bows lights were brighter.

From the point of view of music this opera is beautiful, even though it does not contain huge, memorable arias. Orchestra plays an important role, since there is surprisingly little singing in the opera. That is one of the reasons, the most memorable thing in this production is the visual design and movements, and the music remains on the background.
