Vierge Moderne at Kaapelitehdas in Turbiinisali, the 13th of October, 2017

Opera Skaala is showing once again in Kaapelitehdas a less traditional opera production. This year the opera “Vierge Moderne” is called an electronic monologue opera. I am not quite sure, if I would call it myself an opera, even though it is sung by an opera singer – Essi Luttinen: in the beginning the music reminded me of Nightwish when Tarja Turunen was still their singer and later it occasionally reminded me even of the European Song Contest.

“Vierge Moderne” tells with the help of electronic music, song and dance about the life of poet Edith Södergran. It was quite clear that the opera had been composed to Essi Luttinen, since it fit like a glove to her voice. I also liked very much the videos that were projected on the white curtains that surrounded the stage. They created the different environments of the scenes in Södergran’s life (a beach, a city etc). Even though the scenes were most of the time played as vague pictures and through dance, it was – with the help of the programme – rather easy to follow the story.

The most fabulous part of the opera were, however, Edith Södergran’s poems. Her whole life was sung through in the words of her own poems. Exquisite text and when the music suited the text, the result was charming. I especially liked the second poem “Kärlek”, were somewhat more simple music and beautiful singing was combined with a lovely poem about love.

From the point of view of the music the evening was a bit ambiguous. Partly the music succeeded to create lovely scenes with the text, but especially in the end it became far too electronic to my taste. But there were enough successful elements in the opera, so that I can definitely recommend it to those people who are not only interested it the old classics. There are still plenty of performances left and tickets are available at www.tiketti.fi.

Alcina Vaasan kaupungintalon juhlasalissa, 11.10.2017

Koko teos on yhtä toinen toistaan hienompien aarioiden ilotulitusta.

Alcina esitettiin Vaasassa puoliohjattuna.

Illan kruunasivat kuitenkin upeat naissolistit. Suvi Väyrynen Alcinana, Erika Back Ruggierona, Kajsa Dahlbäck Morganana, Monica Groop Bradamantena ja Elina Granlund Obertona. Tästä joukosta on oikeasti lähes mahdotonta nostaa ketään ylitse muiden, mutta henkilökohtaiseksi suosikikseni muodostui kuitenkin Erika Back.

Alcina at the Vaasa Baroque Festival, the 11th of October, 2017

The Baroque Festival of Vaasa shows this year in the banquet hall of the Vaasa City Hall Händel’s Alcina from 1735. This was the first time the opera was performed in Finland and after hearing it the audience could only ask, why an earth hasn’t this opera been shown before in Finland. The story is, of course, as idiotic as in many other operas, but the music is fascinating. The whole opera is a feast of beautiful arias one after another. We need more of this in Finland!

So, the story is rather ridiculous. A woman’s (Bradamante) lover (Ruggiero) has disappeared and is found on an island, where Alcina has charmed him with her magic. All the previous lovers Alcina has changed into bushes or animals. Bradamante dresses as a man and enters the island to rescue her lover and, of course, the other woman on the island (Morgana) falls in love with her. Naturally in the end the magic is broken, all become human beings again and the lovers end up together.

Alcina was performed half staged in Vaasa. Since we are not talking about a theatre, it was quite natural that the setting was only a few chairs, but performers were carrying costumes and moved about as if in a proper opera performance. The director, Vappu Kiljunen, had done a great job with the opera. The orchestra was Vaasa City Orchestra and the conductor Aapo Häkkinen. From the first note it was clear that the cooperation between the orchestra and the conductor bore magnificent fruit. The City Orchestra had become a baroque orchestra. Their playing was delicious and the acoustics was also good.

But the crowning glory of the evening were the fantastic female soloists: Suvi Väyrynen as Alcina, Erika Back as Ruggiero, Kajsa Dahlbäck as Morgana, Monica Groop as Bradamante and Elina Granlund as Oberto. When Finland has such baroque singers, why, oh why do we not see baroque operas more often? It is honestly nearly impossible to raise anyone above others in this group, but my personal favourite turned out to be Erika Back. Divine singing: the correct technique was there and the timbre of her voice was incredibly beautiful. In addition to singing she also managed to act really well. She was the noble Ruggiero, charmed by Alcina and it was all credible! I also need to separately mention Elina Granlund in the role of young Oberto. I had not heard her before, which was not surprising taking into account that according to the programme she had made her opera debut only this August in Åland. But already based on this small role I can say, that I hope I will hear her also in the future. Hopefully next autumn on the next Vaasa Baroque Festival there will be again some great baroque opera, where we can hear these or other equally splendid soloists!

Myrskyluodon Maija Helsingin Kaupunginteatterissa, 7.10.2017

Kaupunginteatterin musikaalissa vahva tarina onnistutaan hukkaamaan ja kokonaisuus on pätkä hajanaisia kohtauksia maustettuna omituisilla tanssahteluilla (koreografia on luvalla sanottuna aika kamala).

Musiikillisesti teos on valitettavasti varsin mitäänsanomaton.

Stormskärs Maja in Helsinki City Theatre, the 7th of October, 2017

Almost all a bit older Finns remember the super famous TV-series “Stormskärs Maja” from the seventies, which was based on Anni Blomqvist’s books. Helsinki City Theatre has now made a musical based on those books. The musical has been shown to sold out audiences, which mostly – at least on Saturday – unsurprisingly consist of slightly older people. I hadn’t myself planned to go and see this musical, but I ended up getting an extra ticket and I thought that it is nice to see this much talked about act.

The story that Blomqvist wrote is very strong and it follows Maja’s life in the Finnish archipelago from a young girl to a wife, mother and widow. In this musical the Helsinki City Theatre somehow manages to lose the strong story and the play becomes a potpourri of fragmented scenes and weird dances (the choreography is, to tell you the truth, rather terrible).

The set design and costumes are rather nice, though when it comes to set design it did occur to me occasionally that perhaps the meaning was more to show off the new technical solutions of the just renovated theatre house than to create an interesting set. And I never managed to figure out the meaning of the peculiar wigs of the dancers.
From the point of view of the music the musical was unfortunately rather bland. The theme song of the TV-series stood out, but the rest was mostly forgettable. As such the attempt was ambitious which, unfortunately again, caused problems for the singers. Most of them did not have the adequate range required by the songs. The best moments of the whole musical where the chorus parts. They had the catchiness and edge that the rest of the musical lacked. I also liked the performance of Aaro Wichmann in the role of Janne. His songs stayed safely within his range and they were quite enjoyable to listen to.

The King of Lydia and Väinämöinen's Proposal in The Finnish National Opera's Alminsali stage, the 29th of September, 2017

Väinö Raitio’s operas haven’t been performed for decades and now, within a couple of months, we have had a chance to see three of them. Taite Ry and Avanti! brought two of his operas to the Finnish National Opera’s Alminsali stage: “The King of Lydia” and “Väinämöinen’s Proposal”. After Princess Cecilia, which was played in the Helsinki Music Centre in August, I was looking forward to an interesting musical evening and that it was. The name of the production was “Neijonnälkä” (Hunger for a Maiden), which actually described both the operas rather well, because the key idea of both of them was lust. In “The King of Lydia” the king wanted his warlord to see his queen naked and when the warlord was caught by the queen, she seduced him to kill the king and become the king himself. The story of Väinämöinen is well-known to all Finns from our national epic ”Kalevala”: an old man wants to have a young girl, though in this version, she manages to run away. Librettos of both of the operas were written by Eino Leino – originally to plays. The conductor Tuomas Hannikainen had made the orchestration of both the operas. Originally “The King of Lydia” had a much larger orchestra and “Väinämöinen’s Proposal” only a piano score.

Together with the operas Avanti! played also fragments from two other works of Raitio: “Asaria” and “Syrup factory in Kruununhaka”. Their music functioned perfectly as an overture of the operas and as a glue between them. When the evening started by a fragment from “Asaria”, its oriental-style tunes kind of lead the audience to the exotic Lydia. The text in the texting machine was also used to clarify the story.

Out of these two operas I enjoyed ”The King of Lydia” more. The opera, including its set design, was rather dramatic and Annami Hylkilä on the role of the queen had a chance to really let it go. And the music itself was fascinating.

Väinämöinen’s Proposal” was more Kalevala-like. The role of Aino was again sung by Annami Hylkilä and you really could not have recognized her as the queen of the previous opera based on looks only.
