Bollywood KaBOOM! at Turbiinisali (Kaapelitehdas), the 13th of October, 2016

Bollywood KaBOOM!

This performance was  so crazy that it is definitely worth seeing. Opera group Skaala together with Shava (band) performs at Turbiinisali in Kaapelitehdas (one performance in the beginning of December also in Savoy Theatre) Bollywood KaBOOM! (also called a bhangra opera musical). It is pretty much impossible to describe this performance with one word; it is a baffling mixture of everything that you can think of.

I cannot exactly say what the story was, but it had something in common with West Side Story – I think. But the story is actually a secondary issue, when you meet a bhangra guy who was as expressive as an Easter Island Moai statue, some opera singers who could have managed even without their microphones, a few heavily make-upped dancers (some Indian mythical characters?) and a couple of people who had obviously sang in musicals before, too. All singers sang with their voices songs that had been composed for this piece, where bhangra, pompous western musical sounds, Slavic tones, classical singing technique and electronic dance music formed a mad mixture. When you add a gang style fight with knives and an afterlife scene, you get such a hilarious experience that I at least giggled several times during the performance.

If you deeply despise having fun, you’d better stay at home. But if you are interested in a surreal cacophony of fun, this is the absolute must to see!
