SADKO
The second opera I saw
during the weekend – this time in the original Mariinsky Theatre - in St. Petersburg
was Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sadko.
The story of the opera
is about how the river Volkhov by the city of Novgorod got its name. It is up
to you if you believe the story or not, but Sadko apparently was a person actually
living in Novgorod once upon a time.
Visually the opera was
really impressive: the costumes were bright coloured and Volkhov really looked
like a princess which may explain why there were so many children in the
audience. Music itself had lots of elements from folk music, so the opera was
really different from Attila that I saw the day before.
Sadko had a lot of
good singers, but my personal favourites were Varvara Solovyova, a
mezzo-soprano who sang the role of Sadko’s wife Lyubava and Roman Burdenko, who
was the Venetian guest (baritone). Both
were excellent singers.
