WORLD ON THE MOON
I had never before
been to Tampere Conservatory performances and I decided to see this opera only
the day before. I do have to say that it would have been a pity to miss it.
Joseph Haydn is better known for his orchestral works than for his operas – I have
before seen only his Orlando Paladino years ago. However, I must wonder why
this opera is not performed more often. World on the Moon is a typical opera
buffa, which could easily be performed instead of e.g. Cosi fan tutte.
Fortunately getting to
Tampere from Helsinki is really easy even by public transportation. I prefer to
use trains and from the railway station to the Pyynikkisali is about 2 km
(according to Google), which is walkable. Or you can take one of the numerous
busses that go between the railway station and Pyynikintori – Conservatory is only
a stone throw away from that bus stop.
Haydn music is
beautiful also as an opera and the production of Erik Söderblom was nice;
sometimes perhaps a bit crude but not disturbingly so. Though, every now and
then there was a little bit too much going on at the stage, so that the music
played a secondary role, which was a pity. Costumes followed the opera buffa traditions
and the set was ok. In the second act some new technology, that is motion capture,
was used. It had absolutely nothing to do with the story, but it was nice to
see.
My absolute favourite
singer was Olli-Tapio Tikkanen in the role of Buonafede. What a gorgeous
baritone and an excellent performer! Tikkanen sang last year in the finale of
Timo Mustakallio competition, so he is not totally unknown as a singer.
In the end I have to
mention that this was my first opera, where people were actually asked to take
photos and post them to social media!
