A concert by the Helsinki Baroque Orchestra on a rainy Saturday evening in St. Paul’s Church is a lovely experience. Even though HeBo changed both their concert content and the place due to Covid-19 virus, both this content and the place were charming.
The concert
began with a dramatic motet by Marc-Antoine Charpentier “Canticum in honorem
Beatae Virginis Mariae”. This work cosists of a dialogue between angels in Heaven
(sopranos Kajsa Dahlbäck and Tuuli Lindeberg singing on an elevated podium) and
human beings (mezzosoprano Monica Groop, tenor Hugo Hymas and baritone Aarne
Pelkonen singing on the church floor). Once again, I have to say that the voice
and technique of Tuuli Lindeberg suits to baroque music perfectly. She really
sounded like an angel.
An even
more delicious piece was the second performance of the evening, that is, Johann
Sebastian Bach’s cantata “Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben”. It took hold of
you, the soloists were excellent in their arias and the cherry of the evening
was the fabulous end “Jesus bleibt meine Freunde”. It was a perfect end to an excellent evening.
