The opening concert of the Espoo’s Organ Night and Aria Festival was this year Franz Schubert’s “Mass No. 6 in E-flat Major”. I was happy that in addition to the Tapiola Church the mass was brought also to the Kallio Church. The mass was performed by Tapiola Sinfonietta, Tapiola Chamber Choir with soloists and the conductor was Aapo Häkkinen.
The Kallio Church was far from full, but perhaps the most
eager fans had already gone to the Tapiola Church performance the previous
night. The evening began with Schubert’s “Intende voci” and tenor Tuomas
Katajala was the soloist. A truly charming piece.
The mass itself was musically really interesting and I liked
it a lot. The role of wind instruments was big, but the kettledrum also had its
opportunity to rumble properly a few times.
To me the highlight of the mass was “Credo”, where two
tenors (Tuomas Katajala and Johan Krogius) and a soprano (Anu Komsi) were the
soloists. “Credo” begins with the duet part of the two tenors, which is really
rare and I enjoyed it tremendously. But the following bits when the always
stunning Anu Komsi joined the tenors did not lose in competition. All in all,
the evening was wonderful and a great opening to the festival.
