”The Moomin Opera” by composer Ilkka Kuusisto was made in 1974 and it has been performed a few times since. I saw it last in 2017 in the Helsinki Conservatory and now it was time for Satakunta Music Festival and Opera Box to bring it to the stage in the Alexander Theatre.
The story is slightly based on the book “Moominsummer
madness” by Tove Jansson and the second act takes place in an opera house. The
Moomin Valley is flooded and everybody helps in saving the opera house that is
floating around.
The music of the opera is a total mix of things and contains
a lot of borrowed bits, but kids seemed to enjoy it. I wasn’t that excited
about the singing this time, but visually the opera was quite nice, even though
Aili Ojalo’s set design and Tyra Therman’s costume design were, of course,
restricted by the iconic nature of the Moomin and intellectual property rights.
I think the costumes were actually recycled from the performance of 2017, but
recycling is environmentally friendly, so who is complaining!
And a nice touch to the performance was added by the
director Ville Saukkonen, who in one scene jumped to stage as a hattifattener.
