I am pretty sure that relatively many people are surprised to hear that Johann Sebastian Bach has also composed operas. He is normally considered to be the master of ecclesiastic and organ music, so his Coffee Cantata opera is rather amazing. But the music is clearly Bach.
The opera
itself is only about 30 minutes long, so Music Theatre Kapsäkki had added some
other pieces from Bach to the programme, so that the performance was stretched to
an hour.
The story
tells about the beautiful Lieschen, who above all loves coffee. Her father is
annoyed by the cost of the drink and declares that if she will continue
devouring coffee at such a pace, she will never be able to catch a husband. But
Lieschen is far more cunning than her father and goes and meets a man, whom she
persuades to sign an agreement, which will allow Lieschen to drink as much coffee
as she wishes even during the marriage. In the end even the father gives up and
succumbs to the temptations of coffee.
The opera
was quite funny a little piece. The soloists (Johanna Engelbarth, Jasper
Leppänen and Mika Nikander) were not world class, but they did nicely in their
caricature roles. And the Ensemble
Nylandia orchestra also played well.
The imaginative set design and the abundant costume design by Marja Uusitalo deserve extra credit. Both gave the feeling of being in a fairy tale and I am rather sure that they were enjoyed by not only the young spectators in the audience.
