Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra has made it a tradition to have two matinée concerts with the same content on the First of May. The history of the matinée started in the end of the 19th century, and it always contains some pieces that have been performed for decades in this concert. This time the soloist of the concert was my great favourite Tuomas Katajala, so I was really looking forward to the concert, even though he did not sing that many songs.
The conductor
Markus Lehtinen said in the beginning of the concert that in the honour of
Ukraine they will start the concert with the overture from the
opera “Nabucco” by Giuseppe Verdi. That was followed by “Schindler’s List” by
John Williams, were the violin solo was played by Erkki Palola, who has actually already retired
from the orchestra. The next recurring piece was Prelude to Act III from Richard
Wagner’s opera “Lohengrin”. And then there were still Waltz from “Masquerade
Suite” by Aram Khachaturian before Tuomas Katajala sang ”Dein ist mein ganzes
Herz” from Franz Lehar’s operetta “The Land of Smiles”. In the programme the song
was in Finnish, but fortunately he sang it in the original language – German.
Next the
orchestra played pieces by Lars-Erik Larsson, Léo Delibes and Josef Strauss,
before Katajala again sang Nicholas Brodsky’s song “Be My Love” and Carl
Sjöberg’s song “Tonerna”. The last actual piece of the concert was Leonard
Bernstein’s “Waltz, Turkey Trot and Finale” from “Divertimento”.
The first
encore is usually “Porilaisten marssi” (March of the Björneborgers), but due to
the war in Ukraine it was considered to be too warlike and therefor the
orchestra performed the March from Sergey Prokofiev’s opera “The Love for Three
Oranges”. The second encore was again a recurring piece, Marianito Mores’es “Uno
Tango”.
