Andrei Kymach in Espoo Cathedral, the 7th of July, 2022

This year the Organ Night & Aria festival in Espoo had managed to get the Ukrainian baritone Andrei Kymach to give a concert. He won in 2019 the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World prize. He was accompanied by the pianist Hans-Otto Ehrström.

I don’t know if the programme of the evening is typical for Kymach in normal circumstances, but if it otherwise isn’t, it was at least understandable today, when Ukraine is in war. So, it was very understandable, that the programme consisted of songs by Ukrainian composers. They were very patriotic, emotional and even warlike, but there were some lighter exceptions, even humoristic songs (for example, Kyrylo Stetsenko’s “Czar Gorokh”).

Kymach has an extremely strong, fine voice, which he really let thunder most of the evening. I already started to doubt that he cannot sing pianissimo till he showed that ability briefly in some song. But mostly the evening was pure fire works.

Ehrström’s performance was professional as usual and he played in the middle of the evening a couple of piano pieces, out of which “Chaconne” by Johann Sebastian Bach (Busoni) was not the most typical since it is rather long and versatile. But it was great to listed to, especially when played by him.
