A master class is also organized during the Rossini Festival in Bad Wildbad for young singers from all over the world to get some instruction. This time the instructor was Raúl Giménez – a famous Argentinian bel canto -tenor.
The master class had eleven attendants and one of them was
to my great joy the Finnish soprano Iida Antola. The master class has a concert
(Rossini & Co) during the festival, where everybody sings a bel canto -aria
and there are also some ensemble numbers. In the end the best singers of the
master class are announced. Usually the best are invited to sing in some future
production of the festival.
Again, I have to say that it was relatively easy to
recognize the best singers. The best man was bass baritone Jusung Gabriel Park,
who sang the aria of Leporello ”Madamina, il catalogo è questo” from Wolfgang
Amadeus Mozart’s opera “Don Giovanni” with just the right amount of ease and
certainty. The best woman was Iida Antola (who by the way won also the prize of
the audience), who sang Fiordiligi’s recitative and aria ”Ei parte – Per pietà,
bén mio, perdona” from Mozart’s opera “Cosi fan tutte”. Astoundingly skillful singing and performing! No
wonder she was the audience’s favourite and got long and vigorous applause.
