Baritone Ludovic Tézier and his wife soprano Cassandre Berthon had a joint concert on the Savonlinna Opera Festival (Castle Olavinlinna). They were accompanied by pianist Hans-Otto Ehrström. Tézier is far more successful of the couple, and he is one of the best-known interpreters of Giuseppe Verdi’s baritone roles.
Therefore, it was a bit disappointing when the first half of
the concert consisted only of arias and duets from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
They both sang nicely but it definitely was not mind-blowing in any way. At that time, I already started to wonder
whether it had been a mistake to buy the relatively expensive ticket to the concert.
Often this is a problem, when a couple arranges a concert, since usually one of
them is clearly better than the other and if you want to have some kind of
balance in the programme, it easily comes rather easy singing because of the
weaker singer. Cassandre Berthon did sing rather prettily, but her voice type
was lighter, and I think she did best in operetta style songs.
But fortunately, in the second part of the concert we were
compensated for the first half. The mind-blowing came latest when Tézier sang
Posa’s aria ”O Carlo, ascolta” from Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Don Carlo(s). Fantastic
interpretation and the audience continued applauding for a very long time. Finally
I understood, why he is considered to be such a great Verdi singer. He definitely has earned all the
superlatives.
