The third and last concert of the festival Les Lumières was held in the Finnish House of Nobility and the theme of the concert was Marseille after plague (Marseille - the port of the whole world), when the city recovered, and music/opera was again performed. This time there were already some composers that I recognized in the programme, that is Jean-Baptiste Lully and Christoph Willibald Gluck, who are both rather well-known opera composers. And this time there were some extracts from operas in the programme.
The highlight of the evening was the final piece of the original
programme which was an extract from the opera “Le Cadi Dupé” (The Duped Judge)
by Gluck. The extract was so entertaining, that at least I got an urge to some
day see the whole opera somewhere. I
hope my wish will come true one day.
The soloists of the evening were soprano Lise Viricel and baritone
Romain Bockler. They both sang well and got a chance to flaunt their acting
abilities in the opera pieces.
Again there were a couple of actors involved, that is, Joachim
Wigelius as count Anckarbjelke and Alexander
Wendelin as his nephew Fredrik von Gullstorm to tell about life in Marseille
after the plague.
It seems that among the audience there were quite of lot of
people who have learned French, since when in the end of the concert the leader
of the orchestra Jean-Marc Aymes asked, if he should address the audience in
French or in English, French got more yeses. Fortunately, his French was clear enough
that you did not need to be perfect in French to understand him. But if does
give a nice tint, when French is spoken in a concert instead of English, which
normally is the dominant language.
