Turku Music Festival has been forced to move and cancel
several concerts during the Covid years and unfortunately also this year they
have been forced to make changes to the concert programme due to sudden cases
of illness. But fortunately, we were finally able to hear Lise Davidsen and her
accompanist Leif Ove Andsnes in Turku.
Davidseni has been called the most promising Wagner singer
of this decade and I would say that that is true. The first half of the concert
she sang songs by Edvard Grieg. First, the best-known six German songs and then
the less known Haugtussa cycle, which totally enraptured at least me. In
Haugtussa both the versatility of her voice from the jingling pianos to the
thundering high notes was shown and her performing was absolutely gorgeous.
After the interval she first sang four songs by Richard
Strauss and I can finally – after almost six years – say that Joyce DiDonato
has found her match for the song “Morgen”. I earlier thought that nobody could beat her, but Davidsen totally reached
the same level. Finally, Davidsen sang five Wesendonck-songs by Richard
Wagner and so beautifully.
One can only praise also Andsnes’s accompaniment, even though I mostly concentrated on the singing.
