I am not exactly a friend on schlagers, but even I can be tempted to a schlager concert if the singers are interesting enough. When Turku Music Festival offered a joint schlager concert of Matti Salminen, Lilli Paasikivi and Mari Palo, I thought that why not. The concert was arranged in the Ruissalo Shipyard in an old shipbuilding dock. It was quite nice a venue, but on a hot summer day it was a bit too warm, and the chairs were so narrow that you could not avoid sweating.
The concert itself was rather entertaining. It is clear that
Salminen, Paasikivi and Palo can sing, even though Salminen has retired some
time ago and Paasikivi has also left the stage. Salminen hassled with the
scores during the concert (partially he really lost his scores, but I think
that partially he also showed his showmanship), but it did not affect his singing.
His base still rang surprisingly beautifully despite his age, but it was lovely
to hear him once more – perhaps for the last time. Paasikivi sang her songs with good routine. Mari
Palo’s performance was charming and vivacious.
The orchestra: Petteri Ilvonen (violin), Eero Ignatius
(contrabass) and Jukka Nykänen (piano) were excellent and the arrangements for
the schlagers made by Nykänen were superb. All in all, the concert was a nice
experience.
