ARS22 is showing this year an interesting and norm deviant opera called ”Sun & Sea”, which is about climate crisis. The opera is composed by Lina Lapelytė and the libretto has been written by Vaiva Grainytė. It is performed in the Cable Factory, where 50 tons of sand was brought to create an artificial beach. The performers lie on the sand when the audience can freely move on the balcony surrounding the beach and listen to and watch the opera. The opera has no particular storyline, but the people sing about the life and their thoughts about the sea, climate crisis etc. The audience is let in once an hour and shown out after 55 minutes, but the opera runs non-stop.
I warmly recommend reading the libretto of the opera, which can
be found in English (performance language) and in Finnish from the Kiasma web
site. At least I found that it was so hypnotizing to follow the happenings on
the beach that listening to the text became almost irrelevant. Fortunately, the
libretto was built in a way that it was rather easy to remember who sung and where
each song. The life on the beach was made as realistic as possible: People
moved around, ate, talked and sunbathed just like on a real beach. There were
both adults and children there and also one dog.
The opera was very influential. Sure, you could take it as a
funny curiosity, but if you bothered to listen to the text (or read the
libretto), it really made you think about the nature as it is now. There are
still plenty of performances left, so I warmly recommend buying a ticket https://www.lippu.fi/en/artist/sunsea/.
