This year I had only time to see one concert of the Vantaa BRQ festival, but that one was definitely worth a visit. The British tenor Nicholas Mulroy sang (with BRQ Vantaa Ensemble) music from Georg Friedrich Handel’s operas and oratorios.
I can never understand why Handel’s operas and oratorios and
performed so seldom in Finland, when the music is so superb. This concert that
was over an hour long also contained reals pearls, which were just polished by
the excellent soloist and the orchestra full of first-class musicians.
Nicholas Mulroy’s voice was a bit asphyxiated in the first
few songs, but after the solo number by the orchestra he returned to the stage
in full form. His voice literally sparkled, and he had no difficulties even in
the technically most difficult places. The arias were chosen brilliantly to the
programme to express various emotions, and even if you could no language and
had not read the programme, you would have been able to recognize the emotions based
on the excellent interpretation by Mulroy. Exceptional evening in the Church of
St. Lawrence in Vantaa.
